Many believe the car rental industry was founded by Joe Saunders. His little operation started with a Model T Ford, one car that brought the automobile transport the public. Mr. Saunders would actually rent his cars to some customers, he was picky; and would then charge them ten cents a mile. He had such a huge success that in nineteen twenty five, Mr. Saunders had car rental stores in twenty one states. But with the Depression, he eventually he did go bankrupt.

Mr. Saunders was not the only entrepreneur with this idea of renting out cars and charging mileage. Walter Jacobs started up the same kind of business. He too had a large success but decided to sell his company to Yellow Cab Company, at that time was owned by John Hertz. Hertz was bought out by General Motors, though this buy out kept the Hertz Company going. Car discount rental companies started popping up through the years. But Hertz is still known as the largest car rental company in the United States and around the world.

After World War two Hertz went to the airlines. He convinced the airlines that there should be car discount rental stores right next to the airline. Then Avis decided to do the same thing, having a car discount rental desk almost right next to Hertz. Now Avis owns Budget, another car discount rental company.

Today there are many car discount rental desks at almost every major airport in the world and the United States. Some are Enterprise, Hertz, Budget; Alamo and National are just a few car discount rentals you will find. Some questions about car discount rental companies are many. Some rental companies require payment through a credit card, some do not.
